It's a fine line between 'hobby' & 'mental illness

I've recently decided to try quilting. The first project I've started is a queen size quilt (I know this makes me crazy).  I love working on it so far, but I needed something for more short-term gratification.

The solution: mug rugs!!

I've decided I like them in pairs, both so you can share tea and a cookie with a friend, and because once I'm cutting up and sewing the little pieces it's just as easy to make 2 as one.

These are only my second attempt at both quilting and the binding.  So it's definitely not perfect but I'm pretty pleased none the less.  Smiley

The tops are random scraps pulled from my scrap bin(s).  They are a combination of new and vintage fabrics, as well as pillowcases cut up for other projects. The binding is a poly-cotton broadcloth chosen because it matched and there was enough of it in scraps to use. I used a cotton batting, and machine quilted them.

OK, OK, I'll post photos now.

And pseudo-action shot (I'm tragically out of cookies at the moment):

Edited to add: the reverse!  I might like the backs even more than the fronts, so I shall call them "reversible".

Thanks for looking!

These are so cute and the fact that they are a pair makes them even cuter.  I think the fabric you used looks just perfect together.  I have yet to make any mug rugs.  But, I do hope my first attempt turns out as nice as yours. Grin

-I give up on making TOL pendants.  If anyone would like to have my stone chips, wire and ect.  I would gladly trade it all for some knitting/crochet stuff.

-Currently crafting.....A Weasley blanket.  I'd love some squares made from fellow Craftsters.

I cannot help thinking of waffles, guess it's the delicious colors and the stitching. Anyways, I think they look great!

Beautiful mugrugs, the colours are fabulous together!

I also started a queen sized quilt as my first project and have been eyeing mugrugs as a quick and gratifying alternative while I slave away at my enormous undertaking. I think I will just have to do it now!

Omg, I love this idea... a place for the mug and the cookies? Brilliant! I'm gonna have to bookmark this one and use it for a gift to my BIL who is British and subsequently has my sister hooked on afternoon tea.  Wink

Great job!  I recently did my first mug rug, too.  Great color combo too!

Cute!  I made my first mug rug and brought it to work, it brightens up the place.  I do like the back of yours as much as the front.  Nice fabric.

Thanks for all the nice comments!  I'm going to make another one to take to work... I think these ones might be a birthday present for a friend (I made them as an experiment, but they remind me of her!).
