Dia De Los Muertos Sugar Skulls

I try to make Sugar Skulls every year - I think that those who celebrate Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) definitely have the right idea. It's a lot more of a positive way to look at death than the North American way of looking at it. Next year I want to make Pan De Muertos! It sounds like a delicious bread.

Anyways... my skulls are made from polymer clay, but there isn't much emphasis on that part. Most of the emphasis is on the painting. I'll show you all the lil' skulls I made this year. I managed to make six of them. I noticed that the more I practiced, the better they seem to come out each time. It had been awhile since I had done any painting like this. So I was a little rough around the edges to start...

They took awhile to paint. Trying to keep a steady hand the entire time, as they are pretty small - maybe 1 1/2 inches or 2 tall. My favourite is the last one, but I love that colour combo. I want to make more with lots and lots of handsculpted polymer clay flowers and such, next time. Marigolds and roses and bright green leaves... maybe some tuille or something to make a veil.

Haha, yes, I've got some molds for that - next year I'll be making them from sugar and royal icing. Hooray!

Your painting is impeccable.  I can't imagine trying that myself.  I love the color schemes you used as well as looking at each every detail.  Amazing.
