I was really just looking for one to do both due to space issues.  I don't really have room to set up both or store them for that matter.  I really need a good sewing machine and the embroidery is just a bonus.  While I know I will use it, I know I will use the sewing option much more often.

Makes sense, but yeah, for under a grand I think you'll be limited to the 4x4 embroidery area on a combo machine. I can't think of any that have 5x7 for under your price limit.

Costco sells a Singer Futura CE-250 sewing/embroidery machine that comes with software. It has two hoops: 4.5" x 6.75", and small 3.1" x 4.75". It's $549.99.
That's actually going to be my birthday present!  Grin

I just bought an almost new (less than 20 minutes sewing time) Husqvarna Viking Designer I USB for $1k on ebay.  It was a situation where the husband was selling it because the wife never used it.  It has three hoops with it including a mega hoop and is a combo machine.  USB versions are hard to find, but not impossible.
