old game controllers

i have three old nes controllers and i already know what i want to do with them (gifts to celebrate an event with friends, well thats all im saying without sounding too geeky)

but my issue is i want to paint them and im seeing a lot of conflicting advice online and i was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to do it. i wanna give them a bright base colour then black and white fine detail on top

I think if you took the cases apart, cleaned them thoroughly and then scuffed the plastic with a special scuffing pad, paint should adhere just fine. I got scuffing pads from a place that sold auto parts (they were beside the spray paint). The scuffing pad roughs up the surface just enough that paint has microscopic crevices to cling to, and you simply wipe any dust away with a clean cloth or paper towel. For the actual painting part, I'd use paint that's intended for plastic models, like Warhammer figures or model cars.

Krylon makes a paint just for plastic that is supposed to stick even without scuffing it up first.  Not sure if it works(I've never tried it myself), just thought I'd throw it out there.
