I've been admiring the furniture at ana-white.com for a while, and when we got a new couch and needed an ottoman, it seemed like the time to jump into furniture making.  I started with her plan for a storage bench, and made a few changes- maple boards instead of pine for the parts that show, 1/2" hardwood ply instead of the bottom 1x12, and instead of a hinged top, an upholstered removable top.  The finished product:



 
I got the fabric boxes at Lowe's.  The cats already love it...

Catango, I made the top as one piece, put on 2" upholstery foam, cut fabric to fit the top and sides, sewed it, hemed the bottom edge, and stapled it.
