That is absolutely amazing! I'm definitely hitting "this rocks" and spending a few hours trying to figure out how to steal some of your amazingness for myself. Grin I didn't know there was such a thing as 3D embroidery but now I know I have to try it someday.

Also, this made me think: how cool would it be to have a giraffe head coming out of an embroidered tree? *wink wink nudge nudge*

Thank you everyone!! Smiley

It's more or less traditional stumpwork techniques. It's probably easier to show than describe, but roughly, I stitched the tentacle slip on red silk, couched some wire on the back, then cut out, formed, stitched and stuffed it into its 3D shape. Then the slip was applied to the base fabric, punching the wire through and stitching it in place firmly. Surface fabric applied over the top, with the ragged edges to look like the tentacle broke through it. Stumpwork is heaps of fun to do, although it can get a little fiddly!

Oh my, there's a tiny boat in my teacup!

I love me an octopus or a squid.  This is so amazing awesome I soooooo want one!

Want to learn to crochet or knit?  I have a ton of extra crochet hooks & circular knitting needles.  Will throw in some pattern books and yarn for anyone interested in a swap.

Amazing. I don't think I've ever seen 3D embroidery before.

That's so spectacular!  I showed it to my hubby and said "I'm not sure I could do that" and he picked up the scarf sitting on the back of the couch and started swinging it around telling me that I could do it and when I argued with him, he actually thew the scarf at me! :O  Anyway - silly hubby store aside - this is amazing!  Great work jemimah!!
