This was a super easy project that I've been meaning to make for awhile. I had an old rotary mat that was something I acquired so I wasn't too attached to it.  It warped at some point and I have two larger ones so I didn't really need it.  Using the handy cutting lines I cut these into squares and hot glued felt to the bottom.  Very easy and now I have some great new coasters.

I used a regular pair of scissors, slightly sharp ones, but certainly not my best ones.  It was surprisingly easy to cut.
