pfft, after sitting through the most boring job interview I've ever had (some people just don't have a sense of humor) I went home to my retro video player and watched some old episodes of the Japanese moomin animation. And now the theme song is stuck in my head......... maamamamaamama mam mam ma maama paapapa paapapa paa pap pa papa and so on...... Shocked how the fillyjonk am I gonna sleep now.

Moominpapa and the Sea is one of my favorite books, moomin or not so to speak. But Moominsummer Madness and Moominland Midwinter or whatever it was called are awesome too Cheesy

Why do they all have to have moomin in the title in english?
The swedish equivalents would translate like this:
The Dad and the Sea
Dangerous Midsummer
Troll Winter

And who came up with naming the funny little characters in one of the books Thingumy and Bob, when the original names are Vifslan and Tofslan? o.o (that's in Finn Family Moomintroll, or as it's really called: The Magician's Hat) The clue is in their names - their scrambled language, in swedish, have words ending in "slan" or similar.

I sound a lot whinier than I am Cheesy Translations are just a pet peeve of mine.

But on a happier note, I just re-read The Magician's Hat, and while it's far from one of my favorites, it was really nice to read for sheer nostalgia Cheesy

thanks melladh! im gonna look for those ones amazon. that is strange though, i never realized about the titles.  i like them better as swedish equivalents. it makes them sound more serious.  when i was in sweden, i read these little tiny pocket sized moomin books in swedish to help me learn the language. i'll have to see if i can find them now... im curious about what they were called.  do you know of them? they do not have very much text in them, more pictures and can fit in your pocket.

Yeah, the english ones sound a bit silly in comparison Cheesy I tried to explain to a brittish coworker what "det nordiska svrmodet" (the nordic melancholy) was to no great avail, so then I bought him the english Moominpapa and the Sea, for a "svrmod light" thing Wink He agreed to read it and said he could always pass it along to his nephews when he was done with it, but after getting some way in he wasn't so sure whether he could really give it to them anymore. Wink

Hmm, I really don't know about the mini books. Was it something like this?
