Everyone Needs a Beard
«
on:
January 10, 2011 05:11:46 PM »
I decided that everyone needs a disguise for those special days when you just don't want to face the world. So, I obsessed on making a yarn beard to help me out.
As usual, the project grew to include various accessories associated with beards:
bread crumbs (made of painted latex foam from an old pillow)
snot (made of dried up hot glue)
grey hairs
and hidden inside, a cockroach
You can use your imagination and add a multitude of other things...like sunglasses...a kerchief...a pipe...
And see, it works! Guess who!?
I gave it away to a friend who is crazier than I am, so if you don't recognize someone who seems familiar, remember, it might just be the beard...
Oh--and do not wear this to a bank...I will not be responsible for anything that might happen if you do (disclaimer suggested by my attorney...)...

Brilliant! How did you make this beard, please tell. I am often in need of a disguise just like this

Yes, I am stalking the Toys and Playthings board. Thanks for noticing!
I'm cheating on Craftster with Pinterest. It's ok though. There's overlap.

I LOVE this! You are right;
everyone

Way to go Rackycoo! Well deserved and now she'll have to show us how she made it! Awesome. Everybody needs a beard. I want to make some for my kids, ooh, for our family portrait! Oh man, my parents are in for a laugh this year.

Pretty simple but time intensive!
I drew out a basic pattern for the beard with flleece and then cut yards and yards of suede yarn. I sort of hooked it into the fleece with a crochet hook and tied each one of those suckers! I did the same thing with the mustache only I interfaced it first...
Sewed the mustache onto the beard, covered up the back with more fleece--attached elastic!
For the accessories, I sewed snaps behind the beard and mustache and then onto the end of the accessories...I used fishing line to string the snot and the bread crumbs...
BUTTTTTTTTT...if I had to make another one, I would lay the yarn over the fleece in loops and sew through it, row by row, starting at the bottom...the thing took way too much time, but I was obsessed!
My family came at Thanksgiving and everyone got a picture of themselves wearing the beard...whodda thunk that such a goofy thing could make us laugh so much!!!
The entire thing is washable because you know that it has to be shared by all that see it...and a grungy beard is not a good thing!
I hope the family that got it has fun with it!
