Having just begun experimenting with my new sewing machine, I've decided to try and make my first piece of clothing (aaaah! so excite!). I'm sure you've all seen the infinity dress http://rowena.typepad.com/rostitchery/infinity-dress.html, I thought it would be a good beginning project (tell me if I'm wrong). I just had a couple of questions for you experienced sewers out there:

1) What would be the best fabric for this kind of project? I've been looking at a lot of different ones and I'm not sure what would be stretchy enough, too stretchy, etc.
2) Should I hem the strappy pieces before or after putting it all together? I know, lame question, but I don't know if it makes a huge difference?

Thank you for your patience! X)

Jersey knit fabric is good.  I've made a couple infinity dresses, and I used 2 different kinds of stretch knits.  One was too stretchy, it doesn't stay where I want it as well.  I think that was a swimwear type of fabric.  Regular knit fabric will work better.
If you are using knit fabric, you will not have to hem anything.  It will not ravel.
Good luck!
