the more i look at this bag, and read your posts the more i think "Duh, me!" lol... I have to agree with the zipper (or velcro) idea... I haven't quite mastered zippers yet (or even tried, for that matter ) so .... guess I better get busy :-)

this purse reminds me of something that would hold an umbrella (only too cute to just stuff an umbrella in, lol)

Zippers really aren't hard - but they can be ridiculously confusing.  make sure you a) have a zipper foot on your sewing machine and b) check over and over again that your zipper is in the right way before actually sewing.

Thanks for the tips! Funny, I was just talking with my friend (and partner in GracieTom) about how I really want to try a zipper, but for some dang reason I am just utterly terrified of attempting it LoL... I have issues  Roll Eyes

i have the same problems...so now i use snap buttons...its much confusing with zippers, but i will have to try it...because i just bid on 25 zippers from ebay heheh

you could also sew it in a way that has a "flap" that goes over the top part and fastens with a magnetic closure--there is a kate spade bag ("champagne" i think it's called) that has that sort of design.  you would need to have some sort of weight/body to make it close properly.
