I have made a number of crochet sweaters in the past, but they all just end up on my closet floor, or back in the craft room to be frogged.  They were bulky and ill fitting, until now!

I finally got the right yarn, the right pattern and the right fit!  I'm not new to crochet, but new to the crochet garment.  This is my third sweater and I have to say .... I love it!

I used a merino super wash ( can't remember the brand)  I got a whole big bag for $40!  Enough for the sweater with three skeins to spare!  The pattern was from the book Contemporary Crochet : 37 European Designs.  I don't remember the pattern ,but if you have the book I'm sure you'd find it!  I made the neck smaller as the off-the-should boat neck is just not for me.  Love a boat neck, just not off- the-shoulder!

I also changed the sleeves and the waist.  For the sleeves I decided not to decrease at all, so they looked like a flared sleeve until I wove in elastic thread, then they became the puff at the wrist sleeve you see in the photos.

Once I finished the sweater it was too short ...so i added a wide ribbed band to lengthen it.  I think it makes to sweater a bit more casual as well.  Anyways there you have it!  Let me know what you think!

love this stitch!

Well, it certainly turned out great!  Beautiful color and fit!  It sometimes takes a bit to find something you really love!

It is a lovely stitch you used--is it a back cross dc?

I especially love the sleeves...you should be so proud to be seen in this sweater!

Do you remember what size hook you used? I want to make sweaters eventually and have tried before where it comes out bulky too.

thanks so much guys!  it was a lot of work, but i wear it all the time!  i've gotten a lot of compliments on it around town too!

liliesinmycereal: the hook size i used was 4.5  the yarn was thinner than sport weight (can't remeber what that's called!)  the yarn drapes really well too.  finding the right yarn is what really helps with reducing the bulky feel!

i forgot to add the mm at the end.  it took a while using that size of hook, but was well worth it!

Fantastic! I'm still new to crochet and am definetly not at the garment level, but this makes me want to get there soon!
The ribbed band at the bottom is a great idea! I don't know why so many sweaters (bought and made) end up so short, but then I like my shirts long.
In summary: love love love! And it looks great on you!

I'm glad you lengthened it. It would have been silly if you hadn't. I also love what you did with the sleeves. Very creative! I never use patterns exactly as they are either. I always modify them in some way.

Wow, That is a beautiful sweater. It doesn't look like the typical bulky handmade sweaters. It looks like something you would see in a store. n____n Awesome. I'm gonna have to find that book.

I love it.

That looks lovely!!! Is sock weight yarn about the right size.  I am still at the crochet level where my amigurimi still are a little bit wonky but now I have something to aspire too.  Clothes in colors I want that may actually fit!!!

thanks everyone!  i think it was a bit thicker than sock weight ..... can't really remember now!  I am sure sock weight would make a nice sweater too!
