I hand-stitched my first one so don't be afraid to ditch your sewing machine.... I got brave and sewed the three after that so whatever makes you more comfortable.  I also left off the eyelids on Calypso, my last one so don't be held back by eyelids!

I just hand stitched my first punkin recently with some "new suede" material stuff.    He's all uneven and my buttons were too big for the arms so the shoulder joints are a little.... pinched. But I find more satisfaction making something by hand these days. Probably because I cuss at my machine more than I actually sew with it =\
