A cowl is worn around the neck to keep it warm.  Usually it's just big enough for the neck, either made in the round and pulled over the head, or made in rows and done up with buttons.

Some folks find them easier to use than a scarf, and they seem to be quite popular these days. ^_^

There are quite a few cowl patterns on ravelry, but it's also fairly easy to just make one up as you go, with what ever stitch you are comfortable with. If crocheting in the round or joining is confusing, you can just crochet a straight rectangle piece (like a mini scarf) and then sew the ends together when its as thick as you want it to be.

Cowls are also the shorter version of the currently pupular "eternity scarf" (i.e. a scarf, the ends of which have been joined together), which may be wrapped around the neck and head to form something similar to a cowl.

Lionbrand also has some patterns on their website, you'll only have to register (as with Ravelry), but it's free, too. There are quite a few crochet cowls among these: http://cache.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/patternFinder.fcgi?language=&store=%2Fstores%2Flionbrand&search=1&searchText=cowl&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=search

A cowl can be as simple or elaborate as you like, you could always opt to use the pattern of a scarf you like, make it shorter than is called for and join the ends.
