Wow! I'm overwhelmed by all these comments =) To be honest I made this tree like... 3 weeks ago and I didn't even think of putting it up here because I never thought of it as much of a craft. Then today I realised that maybe I should share my beloved baby with you all, and this is the response I get? You guys are just totally sweet and awsome!
So, spoilers of the magic of the tree, for those of you who asked for it:
No, it's not fishing wires (I hate those, they never do what I want them to do... have too many bad memories of trying to hang things from the ceiling at theatre school. urk), and there is nothing odd about the garlands. Tygrrlilee is absolutley right; it's wire hoops. Basically it's inner and outer hopps, with the outer ones being suspended from the inner ones to give it a bit more tree like shape. Like this:
The hoops are wire and they're connected with just normal sewing thread (though I think I had then double folded... or maybe even folded double again, so they wouldn't break). We're kind of traditionally swedish in our decoration so we don't put as much in the trees as americans tend to do (at least in cali when I was there over christmas... wow, those trees are full of stuff. And heavy stuff too sometimes, our tree couldn't bare that).
As for the suspoended part it's simply a thinner wire going across the corner with I hung the tree on. You can see at least two ornaments hanging from it beside the tree top in the picture. That wire then goes through the star (which is hardly visable in the picture I'm afraid) and from inside the star the tree is then hung.
And that's the whole secret
As for how heavy it is the answer is not very much at all. We onl have the lights (not very heavy), the garland and the ornaments which weight pretty much nothing.
I love how it becomes sort of an optical illusion because of course you can see the wires and the threads when you look at it, but with the decorations on the eyes sort of don't notice the foundation anymore.
I am pretty positive she's coming up again next year. And the year after that. And after that =) I love our baby
