When we travelled to Morocco with friends earlier this year they were subjected to me pulling out my journal to work on at every opportunity. When looking through it one day, one of the girls commented that her daughter would love a book like it for her travels. I stashed this snippet of information away and kept an eye out for another suitable book to alter for her. A couple of weeks ago I found one and set to work!

Here it is prepped and ready for her daughter to fill it when she next goes travelling. I'm so excited that she'll be getting this in her stocking and have no idea at all that she's getting it. It was a nice surprise for her parents too Cheesy

A few of my favourite pages

This page was a fluke, and I love it! I was trying to do several pages at once and popped a sheet of card with holes in between the pages of wet paint and shut the page. When I opened it later...dots! Cheesy

I can't wait to see what she creates in this book Smiley

I hope to make one or two myself for the two 50th birthday trips I'm planning for 2011.

It's gorgeous.  I wonder if you are ever intimidated by the beauty of the pages about what to write in the book....or maybe the pages themselves add such a positive tone to anything one would write. I love it in any case.

Thank you!

I get really intimidated by plain white pages, so I like to splodge some paint on 'em straight away and try not to think about it too hard. The I usually find it inspires me to carry on working on them. I had to stop myself doing too much in this book since it was for someone else. I really wanted to carry on working in it!

Okay, absolutely FINAL bit of incentive to get a journal ready for next years holidays!  If I start now, the paint might even be dry before I have to pack it  Roll Eyes

It's weird, but personally, I actually find find nothing more intimidating than blank paper, especially if it's crisp and white.  I truly find it easier to draw on cream even..I'm sure there is some very disturbing and Freudian reasoning behind this  Undecided

Ooooh - I wish you lived next door to me so you could give me a lesson or two - I just love the look of your travel journals but have no idea of how to set about making one.  (Mine would be more of a stay at home journal anyway - haha!)  Really wonderful and I know she will be beyond delighted!

That's lovely.

The page to the right of the page with the tape measure on the left (does that make sense?) has a really interesting effect with a dark green. Is that done with paper towel? it looks like the raised dots from paper towel.

Anyway, I love the bright colours. I'm sure she'll treasure it.

Thanks!

It was a handmade paper book from Oxfam. I love them because they have great quality paper them for taking watercolours, and the money goes to a great place too!

schnerby, that was made by placing punchinella (aka sequin waste) over the page and pressing the paint through with a sponge. It's quite a neat effect for making dots or stars without a lot of effort! Wink

Everytime I come here I find something new I'd sell my soul to be able to make Sad My craft todo list just keeps getting longer and longer.

This is possibly the most beautiful book I've ever seen.

Thank you! I'm sure you could create a fantastic book with all the travelling and volunteering you do!

I bought the journal from a fairtrade Oxfam shop. It has great pages for holding the watercolour paint, and the money goes somewhere great too Grin

I made up a tutorial with some ideas for making travel journals here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=356020

Hope that helps! Smiley

Thank you!

I think the more journals you make, the more you experiment with ideas and find your style (at least that's how it was for me). It will always be a wonderful personal record of your trip, and fun to look at years later and reminisce. I hope you post yours when you're done Smiley

Stunning! What a lucky girl. I know this project was a bit of an oldie, but just had to comment when I came across it. I've always wanted to make travel journals but have never gotten around it...this has definitely inspired me once again. Definitely a nice touch to have instead of purely just flipping through digital travel photos.

Also, thanks for the tutorials!
