This is a present for my niece, who I must really love because this has taken forever to make!
I was talking to a friend about what to make Amelie for Christmas and she suggested a farm play mat. It's perfect for her because my sister takes her to visit a city farm regularly and she always picks up new toy animals while she's there. Plus her grandad drives a tractor for a local farm, giving tours for all the visiting children.
I knew I had to make it in this style as soon as the idea was there. It makes perfect fields that fit together to make a really textural mat. I wanted it to look like fields on a farm, but leave some room for interpretation so she could use her imagination, so I've not sewn anything too detailed, apart from the pond. The purple dotted/bobbly field is lavender, because there's a lavender field she visits.
There's lots of different textured fabrics, including some upholstery fabrics and some woolly soft pompom trees. It's nice and soft to sit on too! It's actually a lot flatter when it's not on grass (clearly our grass needs attention
)...but I quite like the bumpiness of the fields in these photos, it looks more natural to a real landscape.
I was so excited to find these handmade reforestation maple animals. You can reposition their legs and heads! *sigh* I could play with them for hours
I added her name to this bag to keep her farm animals tidy.
I wish this weren't a plastic tractor, but I didn't find a suitable one that wasn't, and it has a driver so she can pretend it's grandad.
Some of the textures
I'm so excited to see if she likes it now. Fingers crossed!
