Two new papercuttings: Mothers and Winnie the Pooh
«
on:
December 04, 2010 07:54:49 AM »
I made these two papercuttings recently. The first one was a gift for my mother; the quotation is from Khalil Gibran's "The Prophet." The second one was a gift for a friend who loves Winnie the Pooh; it was my first time designing the text freehand instead of using a typeface! The first is cut out of an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper and the second one is in an 8"x10" frame, to give you a sense of scale.

Lovely, especially the first one. Did you design it yourself? It looks absolutely beautiful!

Those are beautiful! While I love Winnie the Pooh as much as the next person, I have to say my favorite is Khalil Gibran quote. I had to read it several times to actually get it because its Saturday and I'm slow on the weekends.
But I love that tree. Its beautiful. Great work!

These are fantastic! I love the details in the tree and how well you've done the silhouette of Winnie. The ducks are super cute too
did you use an exacto knife?

Those are so beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen papercuttings matted and framed so I think that is very neat.

You've given me some great ideas Eakarink - though I'll probably choose some simpler designs. The great part about paper cutting is that if you get a great message or design together (like your Winnie the Pooh) half your work is already done.

My husband gave me The Prophet when we first started dating. I love the imagery in his writing and I love the tree you made. They really click.
Huh, I'm going to have to go pull that book out again.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! To answer a few questions:
-I generally design my papercuts on the computer, and I usually create the design by arranging images I find online, because I'm not so great at the art part but decent at the layout/design part. For the one for my mother, the tree was based on an image that I found online, and I added the text and the ducks. For the Winnie the Pooh one, I traced a picture of Winnie, but the balloon and text were done from scratch.
-I cut the designs using an Exacto knife, on a self-healing cutting mat.
-I would guess the tree one took maybe 4-5 hours of cutting? The Winnie the Pooh one was a much simpler design and so it probably didn't take me more than 2 hours. It's hard to calculate because I tend to work on papercuttings in bits and spurts -- if I work for too long I start to go a little bit crazy and the knuckles on my index finger get sore!

Sorry it took me several months to see this -- I'd be happy to share a PDF of the tree pattern for free. Since I don't hold the copyright for the image it certainly isn't my place to sell it. :-) Send me a message if you're still interested!
