I didn't quite understand the chart when I started this project either. I'm not sure what some of the symbols meant so I improvised. I realised that some parts of the french diagram may be confusing. This is my interpretation only.

- After magic ring, round 1, slip stitch to join. Chain 3 before I turned the work to start on the 2nd round. re.

- After round 4, turn back slip-stitch  stitches back. Turn and chain 3 to start round 5.

- After round 7, I slip stitch 1 stitch forward before chain 3 to start on the round 8.

- After round 8, turn and slip stitch 3 stitches back. Turn and chain 5 for the final round.

After a few squares, you should get the hang of the pattern, you can either slip stitch forward or backwards to move to the next stitch of the pattern easily as per your preference.

Hope this helps. Smiley

* It just occurred to me that the symbols i've never seen before could mean to turn the project. lol. i dunno really.

I think I figured it out....the ovals mean chain, the half ovals mean slip stitch, the plus sign is single crochet, the cross sign is double crochet, the upside-down "V" is 2 double crochet together, the oval with the cross in the middle is 3 double crochet together, and the 4 crosses together mean 4 double crochet together....as far as turning, I don't think you are supposed to, but I guess it is an option.
