What I love about the holidays: the cool crisp weather, steaming hot cocoa, cranberry sauce, the desserts, and decorating! What I don't like so much is all the waste that follows the holiday season!

As much as I tell a cashier, "no bag, thanks" somehow I still seem to have accrued more plastic and paper bags than I am happy with. So when I was thinking about this challenge, I wanted to try and make something beautiful from these not so pretty things and give in to my wreath making kick too.

And voila, this Upcycled Waste Stream Wreath:

What I like the most about this wreath is that is has an earthy feel, reminiscent of acorns and snow, while being made of garbage! What do you like about it?

Ingredients:
  • Embroidery Hoop
  • Brown Paper Bags
  • Buttons from an old shirt
  • Plastic Bags

Tools:
  • Mommy and Me Template
  • Scissors
  • Glue Gun
  • Needle and Thread

Process:
  • I cut 9 plastic bags to make 1" wide "plarn" (plastic yarn).
  • I tied them all together and started to braid, each strand being 3 stands thick.
  • I wrapped the braided plarn around the embroidery hoop and finished it with a loop, in order to hang the wreath.
  • With the leftover plarn strips, I sewed rosettes of varying sizes.
  • I cut out the flowers from the brown paper bags using the Mommy and Me template.
  • They were assembled by sewing the button in the center.
  • I then assembled the rossettes and flowers to my taste and then hot glued them in place.
  • Finally, hang and enjoy!

I love this and that fact that it's made from 'garbage' makes it all the more lovely!

my Mom was impressed! She was skeptical when I said "Look what someone made out of trash!" All she could say was "Wow!, That's cleaver"! I think she really liked it. (She was at one time a florist by trade)
And so do I! I'm having sudden guilt pangs of all the stuff I throw away.

Beautiful.  I love the muted colour scheme, it makes it look very classy and something you could pay big bucks for in a shop.

I like the composition of this wreath. It's minimal and unique, which I love! You used the Mommy and Me template from Paper + Craft in a creative way and your materials really take this project to another level. Nicely done!  Smiley

Thanks everyone for all the kind words!

...funny that a few of you mention guilt. These creations themselves originate largely from my own guilt. From years of steady waste-accumulation, of having much material for which there is no practical use, I grew dissatisfied with my lack of creative/constructive solutions. I started to rethink my relationship with "garbage" and brainstorm what I could do about it. I try to not generate so much waste in the first place (ugh packaging!), and, with the waste I do generate, create something useful and beautiful.

It's pretty traumatizing for me to go for a walk in the neighborhood on garbage day!

You're my kind of crafter! Most of my projects stem from eliminating or transforming waste. I also love how it reverses the costs associated with crafting. Why buy more stuff that clutters our homes and planet when we can make something as beautiful as your wreath with "trash." Thanks for crafting! "This rocks!"

wow great job!  i love your use of the buttons.  i was trying to come but with an idea for this challenge, but i lacked inspiration and time.  the idea of putting the flowers together with buttons was as far as i got. love your upcycling.  if i have time after finals, i might have to make my own version of this.  Cheesy

Your wreath is fantastic!

For a while I could not figure out where you used the paper bags - 'cause I was determined that the brown flowers were made of felt. Or something.
My brown paper bags don't ever look like that!

Mind you, I send overseas Christmas presents. And brown paper bags are just about perfect for wrapping parcels. So I usually have a lack of them at this time of year. But I will remember, in the months to come, for next Christmas!

How pretty! The rosettes are awsome the way the printing on the plastic bag makes a good emphasis for the inside. The braid absolutely rules! Amazing!

At first glance, I couldn't tell what the wreath was made of, and definitely didn't think of things like plarn, and paperbags --- more of something like caramel...candy...snow...  Cheesy
This is a very creative and beautifully made project. Well done!!

I just love this, it is beautiful, upcycles, and diverts waste!  What is not to love?  I just hit "THIS ROCKS!"  For the plarn rope, did you use paper bag in the braiding too?  What is the brown?  Thanks!

The brown in the braiding is the brownish colored plastic bags groceries typically have.

Thanks again everyone! I hope this inspires to take a second look at "garbage" and its potential!

You can find the template for Mommy and Me (and the other templates) if you go to the Craft Challenges page and click on Craft Challenge #57 - Chronicle Your Holiday!. There, when you scroll down you will find all the templates. Just scroll over them and click and it will open a PDF with the templates.

I hope that helped!

Thanks everyone! It was super exciting to make, enter and win this challenge!
