Well, I have been saving christmas cards for years now and I finally found a use for like 10 of the 1000 or so I have (just kidding, I did make a dent in the box of cards)

using my handy, dandy, sizzix (tree and star die's) I cut out the shapes, glued 2 back to back (prolly dont have to, I just thought it looked neater and sturdier) and then I crocheted them together with just a simple chain stitch (could just be strung on yarn or ribbon as well)

Great project! I wouldn't have thought to crochet them together with the chain stitch.
