Craft Challenge #58 - Gingerbread House Contest 2 - Entries Due Jan 3 - Jan 10

Winner announced!  Congrats, mezcraft!
Your Harry Potter-inspired home is the winner of our second annual Gingerbread House Contest!

To see all of the muggle goodness, check out her full project thread here:

Congrats to all of our entries this year, and have fun with your Etsy.com shopping spree, mezcraft!

It's time to vote!  Scroll up to see the voting poll.  Good luck to all of the yummy creations!

The entry board is open!  Post your entry thread here!
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=457.0

Let's bring in the New Year with an Etsy Shopping Spree!  Our Gingerbread House Contest last year was such a success that we decided to make it an annual challenge.  So, once again, it's time to get out those mixing bowls and get crafting!

Your challenge this month is to make and decorate a gingerbread house.  Any type of house is permitted (cottage, castle, etc.) as long as it has walls and a roof of gingerbread.  Your entry must be made of edible parts, but it's not limited to sweets only.  The only non-edible parts allowed are a base, lighting and/or electrical components.  No gingerbread house kits for this challenge.  No size restraints -- miniature to life-size houses are tasty and welcome for this challenge.

Rules:

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Dec 1 2010 - Jan 10 2011) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will not be removed from the entry board, but they will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • Post your craft during the period of Jan 3 - Jan 10 2011.  No sooner.  No later.  On Jan 3 2011 there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from Jan 11 - Jan 18 2011.
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster, or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project. Smiley

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner (US or non-US) will get:

(1) a $250 shopping spree from Etsy!
(2) their project in the Featured Projects area
(3) their project in the Craftster Blog
(4) and a prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

To redeem the $250 Etsy shopping spree, the winner must go to Etsy, select the items and put them in their cart.  Once the items are in their cart, the winner will contact Craftster Admin, sweets4ever, via jean@craftster.org with their Etsy Username and Etsy Email.  Craftster Admin will contact Etsy with this information and Etsy will will process the order (at no cost) for the winner.  If any or all of the items are out of stock, over the allotted prize value amount or otherwise unavailable, Etsy will contact the winner directly and instruct them how to proceed. YESSSS!!!  I designed my "house" this year hoping you'd have this contest again!

Just have to finish installing the electrical component, and mine's done.  Its not going to win by a long stretch, but I love it and it makes me smile to look at it, and that's all that counts!

Every year at his birthday party, my son and all of his cousins (and boy are there a lot Cheesy) make gingerbread houses.  We have been doing it for 4 years now (we figured out it's a good way to coax people out of the house for a winter birthday party LOL), and despite the fact that I end up baking and getting the decorations for 20 or more houses, I have never decorated one for myself.  I am excited to give it a shot this year!

I'm bound and determined to bake and build a ginger bread house this year... or maybe a few, or more... I dunno yet. I'm undecided on what it'll look like, but I can't wait to figure it out!

So the Mom showed me the ingredient list for a double batch of gingerbread; and asked how much stuff to buy. "How much stuff? How the heck should I know? Does anyone have any idea how many batches the average mega mansion takes? Or how much this is going to cost? Not to mention all the decorations and candy!
I do have an idea in mind... It hit me when I made the first response.
But keeping it to realistic proportions is a challenge all to itself!

We make a house that's about 12x12 every year (not mega mansion, but decent sized) and we use one batch of dough (and have a little left over for "decorations" or accents).  I don't know how big the "mega mansion" in your head is, but maybe my comparison will help!

Oh, Thanks! I'm thinking about 18" in size. So Maybe 2 or 3 batches should work. It can't be huge, just a small version of a huge house!

We got into the gingerbread mode tonight, but with cookies.  Mom also bought me the kit house, just to practice with. Since I never made a house before, she said it was a good idea to make the kit before making the real one for the challenge. I haven't started it, but my ideas for the big house are coming together!

I've never made gingerbread, or even a gingerbread house, but a $250 shopping spree at etsy seems like the perfect reason to try!

does anyone want to share their tried and true ginger bread house recipe?   This'll be the first one I make from scratch so I don't want to risk a crappy cookie dough that will just fall apart.....  I've got plenty of recipes I just don't know which is the best for not spreading, not being to soft, etc.  I'll love you forever Grin

Belladune; My Mom, who's a professional baker, says the key is not to roll it out too thin. Your dough needs to be a minimum of 1/4" thick. She says she uses thickness guages.
I asked, but she's not willing to share recipies, since she makes money with them.
But I Tried!
Maybe the way to go is pick a recipie, and test it with cookies. The issue really should be in moisture content, and baking time.
The more eggs, and shortening, the softer it's going to be.

Thanks KLKing!  I'll pay close attention to moisture content while picking a recipe and try not to roll to thinly or to thickly or bake to long LOL Smiley

In our 25 years of making a gingerbread house, we always experiment with a new recipe.  There are lots of books about gingerbread houses out there, all with great recipes---find a few at the library or bookstore and go from there.  The most important step (and I'm giving away trade secrets here---) is to bake the gingerbread at least a week before decorating.  You want it to sit out and get hard for at least a week---this will result in a much stronger house!

A couple of nights ago I helped my kids make Graham cracker houses...gave me the itch to make my own. But I am a little dissapointed that I am no longer able to find the candy corn santa clauses we used to get when I was a kid. WTF. I *might* participate in this challenge but I know I would get my rear beat into the ground by all these fantastic craftsters. I just don't have the imagination(I am a pessimistic realist) to pull off what ya'll can...but heck, who knows. If I can get any house made without my kids or dogs destroying it would be a miracle LOL Smiley

Thanks for all the great tips Ladies!!! Shows that ya'll have great spirits by helping even when etsy money is on the line Wink

I think, Daisy, you might just suprise yourself! Get the kids and dogs to go to bed, and stay up late! Or banish them! LOL!
But seriously, I have a great idea, I just think I'm going to let this pass, because I'm going to be working a month straight covering for someone.
I am just tired. I really hope someone makes the house I'm designing in my head!

Oh yes, I am in!

Just gotta solve the problem of the incredibly sticky dough - everytime I've made gingerbread biscuits before it's been so soft I couldn't roll it out and cut and had to form 'blob biscuits' with my hands instead!

I'm totally in, but I find that if you lightly flour your surface, and work on the parchment/foil you're going to bake the gingerbread on, (and also lightly flour that too) that you get cleaner cutouts, and less "blobs". it took me most of last night to figure this out... my roommates are LOVING me right now! also, very large, very thin spatulas, and bench scrapers are always helpful... Grin hope this helps somebody!  Wink

Chilling your dough!  A good hour in the fridge (or 15 minutes in a snow bank) will make dough easier to roll, AND I found another tip online, once you have your pieces cut out, Chill them for 15 minutes before baking them! they'll hold their shape better!

Smiley  baby.sweets4ever and his grandparents made their first gingerbread house together this year!  It was so fun watching them create their lil' house.  He just turned 2 in October, so there were lots of, "Wowww!" and, "That's amazing!" comments coming from him as he learned to squish the candies in to the royal icing.

I later added a back patio and a hot tub... Grin

I hope everyone's houses are coming along well!  I cannot wait to see all of the treats!

I'm not playing either, but wanted to share the one that Lana decorated this year.  She made the tree in her school and added the reindeer school from another kit.  She was very proud of it.  Smiley

I am hoping to get my act together one of these years and make a real one from scratch.  Can't wait to see everyone's!!
