My MIL requested place mats this year for Christmas. I decided to use the triple rail pattern and make some super fun and funky ones!

I made a set of 4 with polka dots.

The backs of the polka dots are a very small black and white gingham check.

I also made 4 with stripes.

The striped ones have plain black Kona cotton for the back.

I love how fun they turned out, I just hope she likes them too! Cheesy

Those are so cute!  I love them!  I like placemats but so many of the designs are kinda granny-ish.  These certainly break that mold.  Great work!   Smiley

Those are so cool!!!  Did you use any batting/padding or anything in the middle of them, between the top & base?

I also thought of the infant playmat thing because of the color scheme. My MIL's kitchen is red and she likes adding black to it.
I certainly didn't want granny like place mats! I'm glad they don't come across as frumpy!  Cheesy
I used a piece of fusible interfacing to give them some body. I didn't want them to be too thick so I skipped the batting. The interfacing is just thick enough to make them feel like place mats, but you can set a cup on them without worrying about tipping.
