Thanks so much for your kind comments, Cinnacat Smiley  Actually, a little bit of both.  I do place them out on shaped items most of the time, like my seahorse art (which was my most fave button art piece up until this stocking...still is my fave piece of wall art though!).  I take a picture with my cell phone and save it so I can refer to it as I work through the piece.

On this stocking, however, I COMPLETELY winged it for ALL the sections, even the trees and stars.  I put the blue stars on top of each tree to start, then I worked through the trees first, the stars next and spent the most time working with the red filler on the front.  Some of the buttons, like the little birdie and the Xmas tree shaped button and the cookie jar, were lonely only's in my stash, and I'm kind of bummed I don't have any more of them.  Maybe one day I will happen upon them again!

The more I look at this the more and more I love it. It's one of those Christmas items that will be cherished year after year.

and I get to brag that I own a featured project!  Grin  I also wanted to add that all the buttons give the occasional effect of sequins, only more subtle (in a good way).  At night, the buttons reflect the lights on the Christmas tree and slightly shimmer.  It's a very pretty effect  Smiley

So sweet! I'm suppose to be making a stocking for our fibre art class gift swap! This is really inspiring and I have lots of buttons. Yay for button collections.

How wonderful! This idea would translate well to things other than stockings, too, so once my Christmas crafting is finished I will have to see if I can figure out a way to use your technique elsewhere. Thanks for the inspiration!
