The backstory: My friends and I are big fans of David Tennant, and met during his run as Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company. We saw the play an inordinate amount of times (shhhh!), got to know many of the cast, followed the on set blogs of the subsequent film, and even went to the London BAFTA premier of the film.  As such, it forms a large part of our friendship.

One particular item of clothing worn by David on stage and on screen is a red tshirt with a stencilled muscle pattern on it. It highlighted David's slender frame and the fangirls went nuts (mainly because there were, at the time, no public images of said tshirt). No one could find out where it had been purchased.

I was at a costume display at the RSC last year and was delighted to find it on display (I even touched it!) and hanging on the wall was an A3 stencil. They'd created the tshirts themselves. I took a good photo of it, and set to work in Photoshop to create a stencil.  The stencil accidentally fell down a few hours into the event, and no one put it back up again. As such, there are very few photos of it too.

It's my friend Leeann's birthday soon, so I gave it a go. Hope she likes it!

The original on display (with the original stencil behind):

The original (from the film):

(Any Brits out there, you might recognise our Sam on the right from the current Terry's Chocolate Orange advert!)

I don't have an A3 printer, so printed it A4 and scaled it up on A3 freezer paper.  The sleeves on mine are long, but I plan to cut & hem them. Also mine is darker, but the tshirts started out darker, and faded after 5 months of washing after every show!

Next time I plan on printing it slightly larger, as my proportions aren't quite correct. I also need to fade out the sides more.

This would rock even if it wasn't Tennant!
Is your friend going to wear the shirt?  It would be hilarious on a girl!

I have boxes of vintage piano music.  Some as old as 1890's!  PM me if you'd like some!

I just realized how perfect this would be as a gift for my BIL.  I don't suppose you have the stencil in a digital file you could share?

I'm afraid I don't, it was a one off. Shouldn't be too hard to recreate though, if you wanted to. I might attempt it again one day with a new stencil, see if I can get it more accurate.

Leeann is gonna wear it on Saturday at Collectormania. I think it might be the first time anyone has cosplayed Hamlet! One of the cast will be there and we can't wait for him to see it!

This is so awesome! You did a great job reproducing it. And I must say, I'm so jealous you got to see the play AND go to the premier of the film! Lucky you!  Wink
