My first successful brim hat

I needed something for the morning commute that would keep my ears covered. I've seen lots of cute brim hats but I'm on a budget and really didn't want to spend money that could be spent on coffee instead when I could make my own!

After pulling the first three attempts apart, I'm really happy with this one.

Very cute! May I ask how you were able to make the brim stiff/to stick out?

Since I knitted with two strands of yarn held together, it's pretty stiff already, but to reinforce it I used some really thick plastic thread that I had left over from a random past project around the brim and whipstitched it in place using both colors of yarn threaded on a needle. Occasionally it needs a couple tugs for adjustment, but that also means it's slightly more washing machine-friendly

Oh, I see.  The reason I was asking was because my husband wants a knit baseball cap for Xmas and I was wondering how the heck I was going to get the brim to stick out.  This might be the way to do it!

What a great looking hat! Excellent job! I have wanted to make one of those also, but right now I am too busy working on Christmas gifts to have the time to do anything else!    Can't wait until Christmas is over so I can get to work making lots of goodies for myself!

Y'know, this is actually a very fast project, it took me three train rides (i.e. about 4 hours) to make the bulk of the hat (and this is with pulling it apart at intervals to re-shape it). Once I write up the pattern I'll put it on my blog.
