random fabric "gypsy" skirt (+ miniTUTORIAL)

I made this a couple months ago from McCall's #6284 (which they probably don't make anymore).  I found the pattern in my basement with a bunch of my mom's other old patterns.  It took about 6m of fabric, which turned out to be a LOT by the time I got to making the fourth tier.  It was really easy to make, although somewhat time consuming.  I'd never dealt with this much fabric at once before, so it was easy to mix right sides and wrong sides up and get things twisted around.  Anyway...

Here's a bit of a quasi-tutorial, sic_transit_gloria:

The whole thing is made of four big loops of fabric (but you could use three or six or as many as you want):


The first tier/loop was about twice the size of the part of my waist I wanted it to fit in circumference, perhaps a bit bigger, and made of two rectangles of fabric sewn together on each short end.  The second was approximately twice the circumference of the first (three rectangles), and the third approximately twice the second (six rectangles), and the fourth approximately twice the third (twelve rectangles).  The whole thing could theoretically be really inexact, becaaaaause...


You baste around one edge of each big looper (except the smallest one) with really big sitches, breaking the thread at the end of each rectangle, and pull the thread tight to make everything all gathered and crinkly.  Carefully pin each layer to the bottom of the one before it so that the crinkles are roughly even and sew.

Put some elastic at the top (I used two pieces to make it hang better) and voila!
