After seeing the pumpkin made by boadicea (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=268026.0) I kept thinking that it would make a great winter holiday decoration. I was cleaning up my office last week and found an out-of-date university catalog that was just perfect for this, so... I spent the last few days creating a huge mess on my table (there are still scraps of paper all over the floor) making this:

The picture doesn't show the colors very well, but I used a couple of different greens as well as a gold/brown to lightly tint the edges and some of the pages. The pages are not all very even, and there are some really rough and torn edges, but since it is a tree I hope that the imperfections add to its charm.

I think that I may make a couple of smaller ones to create a little winter forest scene by my fireplace!

Thanks for looking!

I love it, saw something similar in a magazine made out of a paperback book but as someone who cannot bring themselves to 'damage' books I just couldn't do it...maybe now I've seen yours as well I'll give it a go Smiley

Can you post a tutorial?

I haven't got the floor space for a big tree and with a toddler runnign round I planned on having a collection of mini trees along the kitchen worktop - this would look amazing, esp since we are insane book collectors!

If you click on the link in the orginal post there is a tut there.  Looks easy but tedious!

bedheadchic - boadicea did a great tut (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=268026.0) using an apple as a design which is really easy to translate to other shapes. It really is easy - and I just was watching some tv anyway, so it didn't seem too tedious...

The funny thing is that my husband took one look at the final project and said "so, why didn't you use the scroll saw?" (me - smacking palm to forehead...). I believe that my next one will be a MUCH faster project!  Roll Eyes

Thanks! The tinting was definitely some trial and error, but I like the way it ultimately turned out too.

For those of you who can't bring yourselves to "destroy" a book, try using old magazines or catalogs. I've made trees from magazines and painted them green -- the effect is different than lovely tinting boadicea and DawnsTrees achieved, but it sounds like a magazine and some spray paint is the lazy craftsters version of this! And I? Am occasionally a lazy craftster.

This appeals to the bookworm in me.  This might be a silly question, but can you "close" the tree, or is it always fanned out?

smash - I am sure that spray paint would produce an interesting effect as well (and, I also, am occasionally the lazy craftster! Smiley )

flygirl88 - This one can not be closed - I took off the covers and glued the front pages and back pages together so that it would look fairly seamless and could be viewed from all sides. But, I don't see why it couldn't just be clipped (or velcroed?) so that it could later be closed - especially if it will primarily be viewed from only one or two sides. In that case, I would probably leave the covers on for stability. (hhmmm...I wonder if it would stand if you just opened it up 180 degrees -flush against a wall - rather than the full 360?)
