A "what is this stitch?" thread

So I was browsing through the Top Down Bonnet (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/top-down-bonnet-with-anime-character) completed projects on Ravelry, and I came across this one with a different finishing/edging.  I'm pretty sure I could easily find something similiar to the crocheted picot edge, but I'm a fairly inexperienced knitter, and I can't figure out what is going on with this part leading up to it that kind of looks like a rope (see arrows.) 

Can anyone help me figure out what this is and/or how I might replicate it?

P.S.  I did message the maker on Ravelry a while ago but never got any response.

I'm not sure how you could get those rope thingies with a knitting technique, but you might be able to use an embroidery technique with the yarn to get a similar effect?

Look up 'twined' knitting, I think that's what it is.  With a sort of picot edging.

Thank you everyone!  It does look like twined knitting, and that is a very helpful link for a tutorial - I appreciate it   Embroidery might be an easier way to go for the effect, as well.

I was thinking it looked a bit like one row of Latvian braid, which, after looking at the Knitty article on twined knitting, seems to be one row of that worked from the purlside.

Actually I think it is something I have just done on a pair of Mary Janes - first row: K1 *WRN twice, K1* Repeat to end of row, second row: K2tog (ie the k stitch and the first loop, dropping the second loop) to end of the row K1

Try it on a sample and see what you think.

Hm, thanks for the tip, Roslet.  I am having a hard time finding any kind of tutorial for the WRN stitch, so I thought I'd ask if you know of a good one?  I'd love to try this out for my hat!

The 'wrn stitch' is just a YO. The one she's describing is YO twice and on the next row, only knit the first one and drop off the second making an elongated stitch. It's also called a drop st sometimes.
