I hope this is the right board to put this in... I almost put it in jewelry/trinkets, but wasn't sure.

I am a huge huge HUGE Harry Potter fan, so obviously I'm going to the midnight premier of the 'Deathly Hallows' movie. While trying to decide what to wear that night, I realized I didn't actually have my own wand. I looked around online and decided to make one... Well, my husband didn't like the rolled paper wand was planning on making, so he went off and made me this:

It's metal. And shiny. And really REALLY cool! So cool, in fact, that I had to share it here on Craftster.

The basics of it is that he made a frame with metal coat hanger, wrapped the whole thing in foil tape and then soldered it. But he did it so that there were bumps and ridges and things that made it look really organic. Then, somehow, he had the whole thing taper out at the base and set a red stone thing in it. The stone looks black until the light catches it- then it turns bright red.

Here's a close up of the handle area:

He didn't polish is afterward to remove the left-over flux, which gives it the goldish colored highlights. I love the way they look.

He also went online to find measurements for the wands in the book, so that mine was the right size. Here's a crappy action shot for size comparison:

I really love it. I'm so pleased that he did something crafty and that he's embracing my geekiness. <3

not to be a bummer, but isn't flux poisonous?!  unless they make it out of something else than what they used to.

but anyway it's lovely and i am sure if you do end up needing to clean off the flux you can rub it with something else for color.

I just Googled that and it says flux poisoning only occurs when swallowed. So, as long as I don't suck on my wand, I should be fine. lol. Thanks for the concern though!

And thanks everyone for the complements. I'll be sure to pass them on to my husband. Smiley  Maybe they'll encourage him to do more crafts in the future.

Thats really cool, does it seem very sturdy? I wanna try that now. I've never done that sort of method before. I make wands all the time but usually stick to carved wood or clay.

Actually, I'm a little worried it'll get confiscated at the theater, because I think I could kill someone with it. lol. I haven't actually tried to break it (obviously), but I did drop it on a cement driveway and it was fine. It seems really solid.

Thanks! Sevsonlygirl made it for me in the latest HP swap! That was one of my favorite chapters too. *sniff*
