Husband wanted a wizard's hat for Halloween and I was only too happy to oblige. I didn't feel like messing with a separate piece for a brim and the slit-and-fill method gave me more freedom to get the brim just the way I wanted it.
Here is how I did it:
Requirements:
-Half a metre of blue felt
-Pins
-Sewing machine
-Thread
-Bits of yellow felt
-Small piece of something moon-like
-Gardening wire
-Tape measure
Cut a quarter or so of a circle from the felt. I made mine with a 21 inch radius.
Cut slits. Mine are every 4.5 inches, to a height of 5 inches.
Cut as many triangles as you have slits. I made mine quite big so I could play around with how upright the brim would be.
Pin, sew, and trim any excess bits.
Next, cut the astronomical objects, and pin them into place. Sew (I used it to try out my handy-dandy applique stitch).
Once that's done, sew both sides together.
Now, you're ready to hem! Make sure you leave enough room to thread through the wire.
And, finally, thread the gardening wire through to give the brim of the hat a bit more stability.
And hey, presto! You have a magician's hat!
