Sorry to be posting a wip in the completed projects topic, but I am too excited to wait - don't know when I will have a chance to finish this one, as I am really busy right now.

First, a bit of backstory. I got inspired by a quilt featured in the book Quilts Baby by Linda Kopp. so I decided to make a lift the flap quilt for my friend's daughter, who turns 2 in December. Sarah has two grandmothers who quilt and craft, so I have always been a bit intimidated to make anything for her - she has truckloads of gorgeous quilts, knitted clothes, bags etc. Anyhoo, I just decided to get stuck into it, and finished the centre quilt top over the weekend.

I hadn't planned to make is so long and thin, so will be adding wide side borders and narrow top and bottom borders in the gray and white dots.
If you look closely you can see that some of the orange patches have little flaps on top. There are 17 flaps altogether, spread over the quilt top.

Here is one flap....

 When you lift the flap....

There is a picture! Cute Donkey!

What's under this one?

Doggies!

What about this one?

Robots!

This one?

Humpty Dumpty!

Here are some of the others
Trucks (wouldn't want to be too gender stereotyping)

snoopy and woodstock

a circus elephant

okay, sorry for all the pics. I am really happy with how this quilt is coming together. My daughter says it is her favourite ever.  Hope you like it, and suggestions, comments and criticisms most welcome. Haven't fully decided on the backing and binding yet.

Oh my gosh, that is too flipping cute. I love it!
Did you sew the flap edges into the seam allowance?
I want to make one! Right after I finish the other 38 projects on my to-do list... Smiley

I want one too! This is absolutely the greatest thing and I sooooo have fallen in love with this.

I am sure she has beautiful quilts already from her grandmas but this rocks! One would be hard pressed to find a more amazing quilt imo.

yes, that's how I did it. The hardest part was making sure the flaps didn't get caught up in the vertical seams.

I thought I might have to sew on buttons or velcro to keep the flaps from... well, flapping - but they sit nice and flat because i made sure the seam allowance was ironed towards the top of the quilt. This seems to be working fine. I'm glad because I was reluctant at the idea of putting buttons or even velcro on a toddler's quilt, as it would add a choking hazard.
