I picked up this adorable cotton knit sweater (with stripes!!!) at the thrift store a few weeks ago with it in my mind to make a pair of pants OR a shirt for my daughter from it. As I sat down to cut it today I realized I had enough there to make not only a pair of pants but a shirt as well if I paired it with an old polo I had in my recon pile. (Sorry I do not have before pictures, I usually don't remember them until after the fact.)

After some (not so) careful cutting (I admit, I hacked it to pieces) and creativity I came up with this: pants, shirt and stocking style cap. There is about 4 inches to spare on the length of both the sleeves and the pants, so I *hope* it will fit through this winter. The pants have a yoga style waistband for comfort (waistband made from the polo) and were made mostly from the sleeves of the sweater and a small piece to make up the seat of the pants. The strategically placed pockets on the shirt are to cover up the old stains on the polo where I surely spilled something awful (and for coolness of course!)  The hat was just the leftovers from the sweater after everything else was finished.

I don't think I have seen her this pleased with something in a while. She has not taken it off all afternoon, in spite of the fact that it is still warm enough that we have the windows open! DH tried to take the hat off of her so she wouldn't overheat and she squawked at him and ran to me so I could put it back on her. She is seriously in love with this outfit.... and I have to admit, I am wishing I had one for myself... Wink

LOL Magical Girl. Yes, I do. Smiley I also do swaps. Unfortunately things like this are truly one of a kind and occur only occasionally so there will never be another like this one. One of a kind for my one of a kind little pumpkin. Cheesy

That is so cute! I am new to sewing and wouldn't have thought about using a sweater to make something else out of. How do you keep the cut pieces from fraying? I'm guessing a serger, but maybe if I wanted to attempt cutting up a sweater a zig zag stitch would work. I LOVE your outfit. The hat is so whimsical.

Sally1019, I did serge it. You could use a zigzag stitch with a walking foot and it would work as well. I used as many if the existing seams as possible to minimize the work I had to do and the chance of it unraveling. To prevent unraveling you could use fray-check or something similar, though I just tried not to handle to fabric much after it was cut. Good luck and if you try this just don't stress over it too much. go with the flow. Cheesy Mistakes can be covered up by POCKETS!! Wink

Thanks to everyone for your positive and kind responses! Smiley Feedback just makes my day!

I also wish I had something like this for myself.  What a great idea to use a thrift store polo for this outfit.  I'm not surprised she loves it!  Great job!  I might use the thrift store idea myself for some of my sewing!   Grin
