Ash Ketchum fingerless gloves (EDIT: Now with Ash and Misty Pokemon costumes!)

Gotta catch 'em all—with trademark green fingerless gloves!

So I'm actually not proud of the craftsmanship on these— But my boyfriend is going to be Ash Ketchum (read: the Pokemon boy) for Halloween and I offered to make these. Usually I knit  (I probably would have tried these http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=13850.0) but he wanted these sewn with materials he picked. I'm going to do some fixing probably, evening out the finger length and taking in the loose parts when I have his hand around to work with.

Anyway, here's what I learned:

1. Don't try to wing it without a pattern! Especially if your material is less than fully stretchy!
2. felt and velcro can cover a multitude of sins.




So the fit, as you can see, is meh. Good enough for a costume but less than ideal:



I made darts beause I didn't think to have a separate thumb piece, but at least the tops of the hands turned out ok:




I'm most happy I figured out a way to make the cuff piece with the felt he had. Since it was non-stretchy, I hand sewed it onto part of the glove, then let industrial strength velcro take care of the rest. I don't even necessarily need to attach the corresponding velcro piece, since it sticks to the felt just fine (remember: these are one-night-only gloves so I don't need to worry about it wrecking the felt over time):




So there you have it. Hat was ordered on ebay a month ago since that's the one thing I said I couldn't easily replicate...

Now on to working on my own costume!

Those really are the best! (The best there ever was....)
I think they look really great, I have always had a soft spot for people willing to bring back the 90's.
But they do look very good!

well guys, in the end I did spend part of Halloween Eve matching Ash as Misty! His costume turned out well:





my Misty outfit was a total last minute thing for going out on the town, I realized I already had all the elements, just needed to crop the yellow top. we were at a party before that, I was dressed in my regular costume Gadget from Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers:




you can't really see from the photos but there is yellow edging I sewed on that blue vest—It was not exactly easy to sew quilting bias to that slippery vest material but somehow it worked. And yes that is squirtle peaking out of the pocket!(couldn't find pikachu at the thrift store:( )

Love it, I'm going as Ash this year, since I cut off over 10 in. of hair and have the whole spiky anime hair thing going on. lol 

His costume looks great!

I absolutely LOVE your take on the gloves! They turned out great even without a separate thumb piece. I especially like the lighter green velcro at the bottom.
