Several months ago, I taught my crochet guild how to make this hat.  At a recent meeting, our president showed me a hat she had made using a similar idea, but different technique.

The first hat is Crochet-on-the-Double, and her hat was sc, worked in the back loop only.  Other than the stitch/technique used, the patterns were pretty much the same.

Of course, after I'd come up with the pattern for the first hat, I thought about trying it with sc, but couldn't figure out how the shaping would work.  Turns out she did it *exactly* the same as in the original pattern: miss two stitches at the end of every other row, do that a bunch of times, and then do a full-length row by picking up all of the missed stitches.  Repeat as necessary.

Now that I'd seen it done, I got to thinking: is there any reason why you'd have to do boring old straight rows?  I mean, as long as the shape of each row is the same, it'll match up in the end, right?

Thus was born:

I'm calling it "Hope's Hat" because during the *entire* crocheting process, I was desperately hoping that I'd end up with a hat... because at no point did it look like I would!  It literally wasn't until I seamed it up that I was sure it was even close to the right shape!

As it is, I'm not completely happy with the shaping on the top; I'm going to have to tinker with it!
