Well, I got married last May and I made my wedding dress! I often cut a few corners when I sew (ba ha ha), but this time I vowed to do all the extra shenanigans mock-up, finishing seams, hand sewing the hem, everything. I also vowed not to procrastinate too much. And it took awhile, but despite my entire family's predictions, I finished it a full week and a half ahead of time! Woowoo!

Here is a picture of the whole thing, it's a sleeveless princess-seamed bodice with lace overlay on the lower half and a ruffled overlay over the boob area. The skirt is a full circle.

I made it out of silk taffeta and a lovely blue-green lace that has silver threads running through it. My cat is highly intrigued.

Here are some pics of the construction:

The bodice, all set to go. I wanted the lace to extend over the top of the skirt a bit, so that's why it's sticking up.

On the right is my first french seam! Totally not as hard as I thought it would be. I'm still proud of how neat everything looks, even though I ended up putting lining over all of this. It's okay, I still know it's there.  Wink

I don't have any closeups of the hem, but I sewed in 6 yards of horsehair braid to give it a bit of body without having to wear a petticoat underneath.

Yeah hem! Shoes are from DSW.

Up close view of the bodice. I wish I could say this was how I said my vows.

And the back, check out my lining-up-invisible-zipper skills! And my forgetting-to-put-in-a-hook-eye-on-top skills.

Full shot, playing croquet, with my new husband.  Grin

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, I wish I would've tweaked it more to eliminate the wrinkles on the back of the bodice and tacked down the lace so it wouldn't flip up occasionally. But, I felt super awesome wearing it and it stayed up all day without slipping down! That's a total win in my book.

Your dress looks so beautiful on you. Congratulations on your marriage and for showing your family what's what by finishing your dress ahead of schedule. Cheesy I'll have to remember the horsehair braid for the hem the next time I want to make a circle skirt and not need a petticoat. I don't like the idea of hand-sewing six yards of it, but we'll see. Only one complaint from me:  Never say "homemade"  cookies are homemade, couture is "HANDMADE"  Sewing lovely things is an art not a craft.

Sounds exactly like me!! I made my grad dress for last May (don't think I posted it here yet...I should...hmm) and I usually cut corners and don't do mock-ups and all that jazz, but I tried my hardest to do all the small details for my grad dress and to not procrastinate. lol

I love it though! It looks great on you.

Did the mock up help you any do you feel like you just wasted time making that one first?

It helped, Scribble Kitty! It helped me figure out the fit, how much gathering to put on top (don't want it to be too poofy in the armpits), length of the lace, etc. It was annoying to do all that work and then actually start the real thing, but it was worth it.

Nice distinction, I shall use it in the future.

Beautiful job on your dress, I love the lace over lay!
Question, for doing the bodice, do you just cut a piece of fabric extra long and gather it, sew it on to the pattern piece then cut off the extra or was it part of the actual pattern? I love the look but never can find a plus size pattern like that!
Stunning!

Stunning!

I used Simplicity 3878 for a starting point, so that already had a pattern piece for the gathering that I modified. But, really, you just described how it works. I used double gathering for the back and the front, and 1.5 gathering for the front-sides. It's not the same width all the way around, so you would measure the width of each of the short ends per piece and just extend the length of the long ends. I gathered the bottom first, sewed it on upside-down, flipped it up to make a nice folded edge on the bottom, then gathered and sewed the top. I hope that helped a little!

I got the lace at Haberman Fabrics in Royal Oak, MI. They don't offer it on their website, unfortunately. It was in the "imported lace" section, whatever that means. Do they even make lace in the USA anymore? <-- mostly joking.  Wink
