I've always dabbled in cross-stitch and embroidery... patches... a word here or there on something else I've made, but this was the first time to use a pattern, the first time I made something "big" (i.e. bigger than an inch or so square) and the first thing I made for my boyfriend's mother. I met her for the first time over the summer and because she and I don't have a language in common, I wanted to give her something special. I had no idea what she would like, but she seemed to be very happy when I gave her this. I used a pattern from sublime stitching (LOVE!) and 4 strands of floss on everything except the black X's... I think I used 3 on those... I used back, split and satin stitching. I messed up the color on one section of the leaves and there are other mistakes, but I love how it turned out! Enough with the words, onto pictures!

I used some minty-green fabric that used to be a men's oxford shirt...

here you can see where I messed up on the colors... eeep... (I guess you can see that in the first pic, too...)

details... I love their little eyes and beaks!

all framed and on her mantel!

comments and critiques very WELCOME!! (^_^)

This is really great!!
My boyfriend's mom and I dont have a language in common either, so I can relate to that feeling. This was a super sweet way to say something to her.

well, thanks! i really like that you can't tell where i messed up... on the left, the second set of leaves from the top are *slightly* darker green than the rest. but, i suppose that makes them more realistic, right? Wink

i think i might make an identical one for my mom for christmas!
