I teach Kindergarten.  At the end of our color unit the kids each designed and made a mosaic circle tile for our class mural which was inspired by the famous Kandinsky circle art.

Thanks for all of the posts!  The kids loved it.  They have also made fused glass magnets, pins and sun catchers.
I agree, "real" art projects send the message to kids that they are capable and worth the expense and effort!  It is by far my most favorite subject to teach in Kindergarten.
