It is spring here in Australia and my 10 year old daughter Emily and I have been spending too much time watching Project Runway repeats.
She got the project runway kits for a birthday and has been having lots of fun with it.
We went off to spotlight and chose 2 fabrics and bought a couple of metres of each.
Then it was challenge time.  Emily decided to make a summer collection based around the fabrics and here are her results. (I'm not even going to publish mine as she puts me to shame!)

After much debate and discussions and asking Dad for his imput she decided we should make this one:

But then it fell to me to make the pattern!  Yikes!  I tried my best drafting a pattern from some other dresses she already has.
Then we got to sewing it together, she did the nice straight stuff and I did the annoying curvy facings and what not.
Here it is modelled on the designer herself, looking justifyably proud of herself too!!!

Please feel free to comment, but be gentle as I will be showing Emily your responses.
The first thing she asked was "Mum, can you put it on Craftster?" So here it is!

This is totally awesome! I also love the fact that even in 30 years, Emily is going to remember designing and making clothes with her mother... what fantastic memories!

All four of the designs looked really great.  For 10 years old she seems to have a great eye for fashion.

Kudos to Mom too for creating the dress so well.  Looks like you girls will have a fun summer ahead.

I don't need any encouragement to be nice. The designs and the final product are so impressive! The color schemes and the styles themselves are sweet!

Wow, congrats to your daughter on the awesome ideas and sewing and kudos to you for going with it. What a cool mom and visionary daughter and supportive dad. You guys make a great team!

I agree that there was no need to ask anyone to keep it sweet - your daughter has a fantastic eye for design, both putting together fabrics and flattering shapes and cuts. The color, by the way, is just perfect for her, and I think your husband picked the perfect dress for ya'll to make. Emily - I'm looking forward to seeing you on PR one of these days, keep it up!

How fantastic! She puts some of the Project Runway designers to shame! I love the dress, and she looks lovely in it. Hope you might try some of Emily's other designs as well one day... I'd love to see the ruffle top on craftster is you and she ever decide to give it a go.

I'm very impressed. At first I was worried that a dress drawn on a willowy, stylized model might look silly on a real life ten-year-old, who y'know, doesn't have legs that make up 7/8 of her height, but it's adorable on her!

i agree with all said --but i really am amazed!!! Emily should be so proud!! In total honesty, her designs were waaay better than many "grown-ups" and the actual dress turned out terrific!!!! Lips sealed you actually drew something and then had it turn out the way you imagined --and it looks great on her! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
(and i'm a mom of 3 and quite grown-up Wink)

This is really fantastic! What a clever girl you have. The dress looks great on her, and all her other designs are great...like stuff I would wear myself, and I am twice her age!

Can't wait to see more work from her.

Emily, you are amazing!  I love how you thought out a plan, and then executed it.  And then to have it look fabulous is a real treat, isn't it?   Design away.  Maybe some day when you become famous, we will remember you on Craftster!

Well as a 27 year old fashion designer I can say I started out in your daughters shoes Cheesy  She is doing great! Those sketches are amazing, and great lines for someone so young. You should pick her up a book on how to draw fashion figures. 9 heads is an amazing fashion sketching book, she would learn loads! Tell her I said to keep up the good work!

She did a great job.  Starting sewing so young she will just keep getting better as she ages.  I kept asking my mom to teach me to sew but she was always too busy, I had to finally take a class in school, she is very lucky to have a parent who takes time to help her out!
