I saw something like this in a catalog (Papercuttings by Allison).  Had to figure out how to make it myself, as a web search came up empty!

The designs I saw were for Christmas, but I thought it would be fun to try one with a bat for Halloween.

The black part is cut flat.  The orange part is two triangles glued into a cone.  You weave the cone down through the slats of the black part, under-over, under-over.

Squeezing from the sides opens the cone.

Full tutorial with downloadable templates in SVG, DXF, PDF.

I love this!  I am considering something like this for my son's 2nd grade class for their party.  This with some treats inside would be awesome!
