She turns 13 on the 23rd and loves anything horror related, always has! So this year for her birthday I decided she needed a OOAK horror baby doll to join her collection of the undead! I bought a regular doll from my local Walmart and set to him with acrylic paints, some sculpey, fabric dye, and sealer (aka watered down modpodge  Tongue ) and ended up here  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Oh Hello dead demon baby doll!

Before he met with a tragic end  Undecided

Painting on some shading and decomp spots.

End results  Grin

If you want to see more of my crazy progress pics you can check it out over here: http://ninjarobotthoughts.blogspot.com/2010/09/shhhhh-its-secret.html

Thanks for looking!  Kiss Cross your fingers and hope she loves the little beastie!

Amazing! I'm sure she'll love it. From the first pic it almost looks like the baby bit off his own thumb!

Bahaha I should have done that. . that would have been too funny. Thanks Smiley I think I might try more variations when I have more crafting time. It was actually a lot of fun transforming him.

Cool daughter...and even COOLER mom for making something so AWESOME!!!  My mom wouldn't even let me watch horror movies, so I had to sneak horror time in when she wasn't around...I guess I can thank her, though, because it turned me into a horror nut!!!  I want this for MY collection!!!

Thanks ladies  Smiley I always loved horror as a young girl myself so I definitely understand her love of all things creepy. I have been told many times how crazy I am for allowing her to watch the movies and own things like this from the time she was little. Honestly though, I think the thing is if she knows it's all artful effects and the point is entertainment only, then what does it hurt? It didn't warp me. . . .much LOL  Grin Grin Grin

I think for most people the unknown combined with our imaginations is far scarier than anything that ever made it to the movie screen. I had a couple co-workers fairly aghast after looking at pics of this doll on my blog. One insisted that when she has kids nothing of this nature will be allowed in her home.  Roll Eyes So it's great that I can post a project like this here and see other people react to it for what it is; a really fun craft project.

I think children have a much easier time dealing with "creepy" things than adults actually do. The children ( 4 and 8 years old at the time) of my american host family had a lot of fun with my halloween-decoration-come-alive room when I lived there. And children since then have seemed to be more interested by than scared of the gravestone, skull and bones decorations still lying around.
Great job at bringing out the inner demon of this baby-doll, it looks a lot more , shall we say honest (?) now.
And could you please tell me if you used some particular kind of paint? The experiments I have started with painting on plastic have all disintegrated after a while...

Hi BirdBones Thank you  Smiley I agree, children are fascinated by so-called scary things. It's really a disservice we do to them when we keep them from experiencing things like this simply because we believe they are unable to understand it. They're much better at changing and adapting their attitudes then we are.

I pain on vinyl dolls with regular acrylics from the craft store, building up the finish of the doll in layers. Usually 4-5 layers of paint in total. Then I seal the doll in a mixture of thinned out ModPodge Hardcoat & water. When the first coat of sealant is dry I add more glue and seal it again. Repeating the process usually about 4 times. This seems to hold up quite well. My daughter plays with her dolls but she is fairly gentle and loving with them. They are her babies after all.

Don't hesitate to ask if I can answer any other questions for you!  Grin

BirdBones, depending on where you are, do you have craftshops in your area? Mod Podge is a brand name.
a Google delivered this:
Kleber und Holzleim auf PVAc(Polyvinylazetat)- Basis

Der Kleber ist im flssigen Zustand wei, trocknet dann halb oder ganz transparent auf.
http://www.google.ie/imgres?imgurl=http:

Short of that, you could PM me and I could send you Mod Podge by snailmail from Holland.
