So, I just finished my first mini art quilt for the current round and my partner, PinkMafia, received it already! Lots and lots of time went into this quilt- everything but the binding was hand stitched. This was my first time binding and I couldn't find any online tutorials showing how to bind around corners using the double bias tape Sad so I ended up cutting the binding into strips and sewing it on that way Undecided Kinda janky, but still not bad for my first time binding.
So here we are, onto pictures!
This is the image I found on google that I based the girl in the quilt on:

It's a vintage burlesque poster that I really liked ^_^

This is the full quilt that I made:

I was trying to go for a more "peacock" feel to it with the colors and still have it (somewhat) match the decor she already had in her living room. I started with the white background and quilted circles with this really pretty green and purple metallic thread I found ^_^ Then I appliqued the color circles onto the quilt and added iron-on images of famous burlesque girls. But the thing that started it all was the fan! It was the very first thing I made for this quilt and I'm very proud of it. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford actual ostrich feathers for it, so I faked it as best as I could! LOL!

The feathers were sewn onto a felt piece and then I sewed lace over the felt and added several rows of delica peacock colored beads. I love love love how it turned out! And since my lovely partner wanted lots of 3-D elements I decided to use "pearls" and actually bead the jewelry onto the girl:

I think the fun part about the entire piece is that not everything is sewn down into place, so you can actually go through and gently play with the feathers and the beads and they feel ever so nice to touch ^_^

Here are two more detail pics. I embroidered something different into all of the circles that didn't have fabric or iron transfer in them and this is one of my favorite circles- I couldn't do peacock feather background (like I wanted to) so this is where I snuck in some of those ^_~

And another shot of the head to show the height of the feathers. There are about fifty feathers sewn into that thing, even if it doesn't look like there are, and I had to hand cut and groom each one >_< Big project, but love how it turned out! Oh- and her face and the highlights and shadows on her body were all hand painted with fabric paints.

Whew... I think I'm done. I'm ever so glad you like it PinkMafia! And for everyone else who takes a gander, I hope you like it, too ^_^ Thanks!

You did a really awesome job with this project. It's very transformed from the original inspiration, and the amount of detail you put into it is stunning. What a successful quilt!

Beautiful, simply and incredibly a beautiful job!  I love the peacock-inspired colors as well.  I think that the hair is the crowning point and all your fantastic little details join together to make such an incredible work of art.  I am constantly amazed by the artists here at Craftster.  Job well done.

P.S.  I love this so much I just rocked it.

Wow! Thank you for all the wonderful comments, everyone ^_^ I never dreamed I'd get this kind of response on this quilt, but this definitely makes me want to make more art quilts in the future! I had a lot of fun and a lot of heartache going into this quilt- especially after my two year old decided to take a pen and color all over the top part of it, hehe >_< So, now it's actually two inches shorter than it was originally supposed to be... I was almost to the point of scrapping the entire project, but I'm glad my husband convinced to keep going with it!
Thank you, again, everyone!

I usually don't gush over people's projects and insist that I NEED whatever it is that they made, but whoa, I seriously really really really want this. I haven't made a quilt yet, but if I ever get the chance to do an art quilt, I totally want to take inspiration from this right here. I will have to find a different image, but I would LOVE to do the fan if I could?! Because I canNOT go through life knowing that THIS is out there and not doing something about it!!!
