So I haven't made jewelry of any sort before, but I was thinking of trying my hand at a piece of Steampunk for a swap partner. I don't want to get too specific in case they see this.

Basically I was wondering if you guys had any tips on where I can find a few supplies quick. Is this the sort of thing I can go to a regular craft store for? (Like JoAnns or Micheal's) Or should I be finding old pieces of electronics at thrift stores and taking them apart? I basically just want to make one smallish piece.

You can get a few items from Michaels, look for the Tim Holtz Idea-ology collection in the scrapbooking area. They have gears, keys, etc. Here is an example:

Then check out the jewelry making area where you can find lockets and cameos.

In another area of scrapbooking, they also sell faces of clocks that are about wrist watch size Smiley

Rock, paper, scissors? Why, yes, I've used them all.
