When I asked my soon to be 5yr old son what kind of cake he wanted for his birthday I meant chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or something along those lines.  He replied "I want a cake that looks like a bag of popcorn" and didn't waiver from that idea. 
I'd been wanting to try marshmallow fondant and it worked really well for this.  It worked remarkably well for the individual popcorn pieces.  Smiley
