Just finished the final pieces of my second house, but i am really having trouble deciding whether I should paint it flat black (as the silhouette looks very halloweeny) or if I should add color.
The obvious solution would be to make another one and leave one black and paint the other, but I am already chomping at the bit to move on to a new design. What do you think? Color? Or flat black?

if it were to be painted in color, I would just real thinned out colors, so it still has an overall dark effect. I think it would retain it's creepyness that way. I friggin love it by the way  Grin

Maybe some accent color, of orange or purple. hard choice looks great.

It looks really awesome!! Cheesy

I think it'd be nice if you painted one of those little pumpkins I see off to the side and put one in the window up top. Just a nice little focal point.

A little detail/focal point of color would be good, IMHO. :3

Do you have any of the rubbing wax stuff? Or mica powder? They rub on and leave a sheen and very faint colour, but it would still be black overall (which, incidentally, is amazing)

i second this idea.  in fact i came in here to type it but i'm glad someone else did first because i couldn't remember the name of that kind of colors that you rub on.

If you decide to leave it black, you could color the pumpkins and use them in the design.  It's just amazing.  Can't wait to see the finished project!

id' leave it as it is, or just color some edges, like with the metallic powder or brownish oil and clean the rest away, just to give it some 'used' tone... I hope i give the idea of what I mean.. ^^

anyways, it's a fantastic sculpture!

That is wicked, wicked, wicked!!! You're house is going to look so awesome come halloween, I cannot wait to see the followups and how everything looks together.

I LOVE the dark look of it! Buuut, I think it would look great if it had just a bit of color. Like a dry brushing of a dark purple on the house, just hit the edges of the shingles with a medium grey dry brush. Dry brush the steps in a light grey, the molding and trim in a greyish white, then lightly wash the door and tree with a dark brown. Just don't cover up too much of the black!

or, or, or, I know! Barely dry brush the whole thing in a greyish white, it'll keep the monotone color, won't cover too much of the black, but will really make all the great features pop.

If at any time you have put on too much color, just come back and 'antique' in black, it'll be perfectly gloomy Smiley

That is fantastic!

I think adding some highlights (not sure what with) would give it a bit more depth

I love it. Personally I would stain the door red and stain the pumpkins as well.

Another thing that could make the details stand out more without changing the overall effect is using some watered down paint then wiping most of it off, like a stain.

I think for some creepy effect you should have one thing red.. kind of schindler's list effect.

I love the silhouette itself.  My vote is to leave it.  Wonderful work by the way.

This is stunning!

I'd leave it black. It looks textured and this way you really have to look closely at it to appreciate the detail.

I agree with the majority of the people here. I prefer to leave it black -- I think color would cheapen the look of it.

maybe just a tiny bit of purple or orange?
i suggest painting just the roof and trim of the house, so the rest is just left black.

very nice work, btw!
