I'm doing a monster theme for my son's 5th birthday in October. The party will be the day before Halloween, so I can get away with a little Halloween tossed here and there too.
I also might tell the kids they can dress as thei\r favorite monster (or make one up) and if they all do, have a costume contest.
I already bought a lot of the tableware at Target in the Halloween clearance last year, so had a pretty good start. Otherwise, I'm doing a lot with monster eyeballs & monster fur.
Leading up to our front door will be monster footprints and then there will be a sign on the front door saying, 'Welcome to Zavion's Monster Bash!'
My fireplace mantle will be covered with fur, then there will be pic frames with my son growing up interspersed with some vases holding monster eyeballs (Oriental Trading Co has some). Then a BIG letter Z (his initial) also covered in fur. There will be a banner underneath the mantle simply saying, "BOO!"
In the dining room (where the food will be served) there will be a big 'Happy Birthday' banner held by two BIG monsters (I found a greeting card at Target with the most awesome monsters, so tile printed them). The table will be covered in fur with googly eyes scattered about. The pizzas (his request) will be on cardboard circles that have big eyeballs on them (printing out a big eyeball then covering with wax paper) so when you start taking slices of pizza, it will be 'staring' at you.
We're also having 'Monster Eyes (http://halloweenalliance.com/party/marshmallow-monster-eyes.htm)
' and I'm going to try my hand at cakeballs & decorate them with to look like eyes. I'm also making caramel corn the I'm putting into individual paper cones (using monster scrapbook paper) and putting them in a tray that is filled with more eyeballs). I'm also planning on making some custom water bottle labels to match the theme. His cake will (hopefully) look like this http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/kids_cake.html#c3
and I plan to make some additional cupcakes using the same eyeball idea (just a few per cupcake).
For activities; we're doing 'The Monster Mash', which will basically be like musical chairs, Monster bingo (one of the things I bought on clearance last year), bobbing for apples (my son's request) and hopefully something craft the kids can do (I'm thinking of having them make monster pumpkins using those foam/craft pumpkins). For the little ones (under 2) I have some of those grow capsules so they can each 'grow' their own monsters and I'm thinking of making a monster to stick on the wall with contact paper and giving them the pieces to make him 'complete' (eyes, horn, teeth, etc).
For favors, I have some of the spiky, squishy balls in the colors (bright green, orange & blue) some gloopy play stuff in the same colors, and some other monster things I picked up at Micheal's in their dollar section.
Let's see...I think that's about it. Hopefully I'll actually be able to get everything done, especially since we'll be getting back from Disneyland only four days before his party!
