I'm broke, so am doing handcrafted gifts this year. That, and it's got more sentimental value. Yeah... yeah...

Here are a few ornaments that have been finished and blocked.

Those are really cool. How did you make them stiff though?

Mix up some liquid starch and water (the proportions are on the starch container - a little goes a LONG way), soak them for a couple of hours, then stretch them into shape and pin them on a stiff-ish surface until they're dry. I use an old corkboard, and make sure to use pins that won't rust, or they'll leave rust marks sometimes.

Don't worry, it's just a plastic boob.

They're beautiful!  My nanny used to make stiff doilies with the same method.  We also still have some crocheted angel ornaments that my other grandmother made us.

Your gifts look great.

These are gorgeous! I've thought about making some but man, thread projects can be so daunting! Kudos to you!

Aww... Thanks, everybody!

My ancient (at the time, some ten-years-dead now) neighbor growing up taught me how to crochet when I was about 4 or 5, so these are pretty quick and easy to churn out. That, and they remind me of the doilies that Grandma had EVERYWHERE!

Woodlyn - These are actually pretty quick and easy. There were books printed a few years ago with nothing but snowflake patterns in them. The smaller ones take me between a half hour and two hours each to make - while being distracted by TV or a movie - and some of the larger ones or dimensional ones (essentially two or three of these that are pictured put together and stiffened in a way that makes them 3D) can take an afternoon or more. These could be a nice introduction to thread crochet, though. You should try one or two!
