I am in the process of the crafting for the ott mustache swap, and I noticed on my partner's etsy, that she favorited a few vintage photographs and postcards of men with mustaches (i.e. http://www.etsy.com/listing/52277816/1911-vintage-postcard-couple-rowing-by). Could I now print and use those images to make some extra goodies for her? Or is that a big no-no? I hope that made sense; it is ridiculously late and I am so out of it haha. Thanks so much for your help!

I REALLY want some funny hoop-framed embroidery! Wanna do a personal swap?

I would not print them out, an idea is one thing, but to steal an image would be wrong. Even when I have purchased the item, I will ask permission to use their photo on my blog while I wait to receive it.

That particular image is probably in the public domain by now.  In that case, you could do whatever you like with the image.  Over a certain age, most things revert to public domain, you could do a little research on it.

It's in the public domain likely, and since it's not an artistic shot just a scan of the image I'd feel morally right doing so. And you're not selling it, so that's an even better pointer for the ethical side.  Also, if you change something at least a certain percentage, it becomes your own, too.  I forget the percentage, but my artist mom says around 50% or greater.

I think it depends on the intent.  Are you doing this so you don't have to buy the old postcard?  Or just because it will work perfectly with your design?  There is no living artist to ask now, so the rules are a bit different.
