I recently participated in my first Organized Craft Swap.  "Yarnies vs. Sewists"
My partner's favorite color combo is red and black, and she preferred something non-girly. Styles she likes are rock, goth and steampunk. That was kind of challenge for me, as my style is more vintage-modern and I love light colors! But there is a Goth that lurks deep within my soul (wish I had pics of my Robert Smith worship days). I made a WIP tote for her crochet projects based off of my original Monster Art Totes that I made awhile back (here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=340056.0). I found some great Alexander Henry fabric that fit my theme, and I lined the tote and made the side panels from it.

I also made a crochet hook book to fit inside the inside pocket of the tote. It is fleece and soft to protect the finish of her hooks.

That is so cute. From the thumbnail I thought it was a crayon holder, but crochet case is even better.

What a great design! It seems like you really thought about what she needs and made it look fabulous! I like all the different fabrics you used--they coordinate very well but don't look like they all came from the same collection at Joann's. The skull on the front is really fantastic!

Did you use a pattern for the bag itself?  This is a great size and design, I'd love to make something similar (except for stitchers bwahahaha!).

So adorable, I love everything about this Smiley

Thanks Smiley I didn't use a pattern for this. It was actually pretty simple to do, but kind of hard to describe. Maybe I can sketch it out and post later.

Also, for those that love the fabric, it is Alexander Henry's Paseo de los Muertos from the Skulldiggery collection: http://www.ahfabrics.com/products.php?cat_id=510
It is part of the current collection and is widely available (so no need to kill for it, just buy some!)   Wink

Here is a quick tutorial on how I made the tote with the side panels. The front and back panels were about 18" wide by 16" tall, and the side panels were abut 5"x16".

Note that you will lose some height because part of your side panels will become the bottom of the bag, so cut the panels taller than you want the finished bag to be. If you want to calculate it, it depends on how wide your side panels are-your bag will be shorter by half the width of your side panels. Example-if your side panels are 4 inches wide, your bag will be 2 inches shorter than the pieces you cut. (plus seam allowances)

I hope that makes sense??

Even with making the crochet hook book I love how you made space for them on the outside of the bag. It allows for easy access for those that you are using on current projects. I love it!

Ooooh, pretty.  I dig applique, ive been procrastinating on a mushroom applique quilt forever....think ill procrastinat learning to crochet by making a crochet project bag. I especially like the little book, I made one of those for sewing needles with my grandmother when I was younger....ahh, nostalgia.
