i like the idea of the karma thing, but i do see how it could be conveyed as kinda negative. I've been in a bunch of swaps, and one thing I've noticed, is usually pretty much the same people swap. You do learn to tell who is always on time and a great swapper, and who is late or flakes. Its crappy to work so hard on a swap, and have people not post that they recieved it, and be late on sending your stuff in return. Its very frustrating

krazigal (and others of course!),
do you think a publicly displayed karma will encourage people to be better about swapping? or will it just discourage people from participating?
i feel like it would probably be a positive thing.
but i feel like i'm out of my league here with all you regular swappers and organizers. maybe i just don't know what i'm talking about.

i think it will encourage people to swap better, b/c they wont want everyone to know that they are a crappy swapper, by viewing their karma rating. But it might also discourage newbie swappers from swapping, if they don't understand the karma rating. Where would it be visible? I don't think it should be set up how the member status is. like newbie, craft god/goddess, etc. I think it would be a little nicer if you could view it in someones profile

I agree with Krazigal and think it shouldn't be viewed unless you click on their name to check their stats. I love swapping and I hope that this would motivate people to be on time and not flake. It would also give organizers to not allow people who constantly ship late, don't thank their partner...

Two things...
I don't think the karma would be applied to "good" swappers. It would mainly take over the "bad swappers list" and those swappers who flake out would have their karma go down a point.
Also, it could either be shown on the profile page or everytime you post right under your name. When the other mods were discussing this we thought it was best to have it in the profile, so you can't see it unless you want to!
Thanks for all your input so far

Does this mean if you are a good swapper your karma level will stay at 0?
Just so I know for future times organizeing swaps.

So basically, you'd start with some basic number and your score would go down every time you blew it? Would there be any way to make up for that, or are you just marked down forever? (I would favor a system that would let you earn back postive points for cleaning up your act, or to show that your long-term pattern is good even if you went through some kind of bad patch in your life at some point.)

I agree, it should be in the profile.

i totally am down for the karma thing. and i also agree with queen of swords.
i think that someone where in the karma thing there should be certain point for certain things. like if they flake its more points or something than if they send it late with no contact saying that its gonna be late.
I know im guilty of being late.wel not always, but i did over swap myself
around thanksgiving, with out thinking, about the end of school (art major) and making everyones holiday gifts, oh and a job in the mall. but i kept in contact and updated everyone asap. and i will never over swap again! ::pinki swear::
i organized a swap and one person didnt get anything so i made a really nice purse for them (it was a purse swap) and sent it to them, to make up for them not recieving. and the next swap that i particpated in that person that got burned and made somthing for BURNED me! not cool!
but yah i like the karma idea.

I think some sort of rating system is good-- like on e-bay...
That said, I am still reeling from the bad swappers in the Secret Santa swap! Poor Jessicakes & Idigmusic have yet to receive anything, life has been crazy & I've been working hard to keep on top of the other swaps... Why I have signed up for anymore, let alone organized... I must be crazy!
(ladies, if you are reading this, I am sending BY THURSDAY, 17th Feb. Yes, 2 months after the original mail by date. Yes, I feel horrible. Yes, I have been stressing so much over this that I've screwed up a bunch of projects)
